Deep Tissue Massage vs Remedial Massage: What are the Differences?

A remedial massage is suggested if you’re dealing with a specific injury or chronic pain that needs targeted treatment. While deep tissue massage if you have generalised muscle tightness or want a full-body experience that works on relieving deeper layers of tension and stress.

What is a Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage focuses on reaching deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is designed to release chronic tension and relieve pain in the deeper layers, often caused by overuse, stress, or injury. Unlike remedial massage, deep tissue massage generally addresses the entire muscle area rather than specific dysfunctions.

What is a Remedial Massage?

Remedial massage is a therapeutic treatment that focuses on identifying and addressing musculoskeletal issues. It involves assessing, treating, and preventing soft tissue injuries and dysfunction, making it ideal for anyone dealing with specific injuries, pain, or postural issues.

Benefits of Deep Tissue Massages

The deep tissue massage technique is a focused and therapeutic approach, where firm pressure is applied to deeper layers of muscles and connective tissues. This process targets and releases muscle knots and chronic tension, promoting relaxation and improved mobility. Deep tissue massage may also assist with:
  • Pain relief and reduction of muscle stiffness
  • Increased range of motion and functional improvement
  • Improved circulation and enhanced blood flow
  • Faster recovery from muscle injuries and strain
  • Alleviation of stress-related tension and headaches
  • Reduction in scar tissue formation and improvement in tissue flexibility

I have been attending Olivia’s mat Pilates classes for a while and can highly recommend them. She is an excellent instructor, down to earth and listens. I have met some lovely people and we often stay for a coffee and a chat afterwards.

I had a fantastic experience with Physio Pro Floreat! From the moment I walked in, Olivia was friendly, professional, and genuinely cared about my recovery. She took the time to thoroughly assess my lower back pain, explain everything clearly, and create a tailored treatment plan that really worked including reformer pilates!

I’ve seen a huge improvement in my mobility and pain levels, and I feel much more confident getting back to netball. The sessions were always supportive and motivating, and I never felt rushed.

Highly recommend to anyone looking for support through their rehab journey!

Olivia is amazing, she got my calf ready for a cricket grand final and thanks to her advice I haven't had calf issues since.
I've also referred other players from my cricket club who have all had excellent feedback!

The mat work pilates classes are great, helps with my balance and flexibility. The physio changes up the routines regularly and works different areas. And the tunes are great too 😃

I was referred to Olivia Purnell at Physio Pro by my PT after experiencing an incredibly painful bout of sciatica — something I’d never dealt with before. At my first appointment, I could barely sit in the waiting room, but within a short time of working with her, I was back to heavy lifting.

Olivia was informative, gentle and genuinely attentive to my limitations. Her approach which included massaging, stretching and dry needling made a huge difference. Three months on, I’m completely free from muscle spasms and pain.

I can’t recommend her highly enough.

I've been working with Olivia following a car accident, first through gym sessions and then across around 24 reformer Pilates sessions. She's been incredible to work with. Supportive, knowledgeable, and truly invested in helping me rebuild my strength and confidence. Over time, I noticed real progress, especially with my posture, which showed that what she was teaching was really sinking in. Olivia always struck the perfect balance of pushing me to my limits without ever causing more pain or setbacks. She's fought for my recovery every step of the way, and I honestly couldn't recommend anyone more than Liv.

I have been seeing Olivia at Floreat Physiotherapy for nearly two years now for ongoing treatment of my spine and legs. Her knowledge, skill and consistency have been invaluable in supporting my mobility and overall wellbeing.

Olivia combines excellent manipulative therapy with practical rehabilitation support, and she has also guided me through hydro workouts when needed. I always feel listened to, supported and treated as an individual.

On the rare occasion Olivia is unavailable, the clinic has arranged for Chris to step in — another excellent practitioner who maintains the same high standard of care.

I’m deeply grateful for the professionalism and continuity of care at Floreat Physiotherapy and would highly recommend them.

I cannot begin to express how amazing this physio clinic is! Olivia has been my physio for the past year after I was in a car accident. My injuries were my neck and back. After trying several physio practitioners nothing was really helping. I found that Olivia genuinely cared about my getting better. She recommended several exercises to do at home. She encouraged me throughout recovery and helped restore my quality of life. I have no pain in my back, I’m back to training at the gym and thriving in my life. Thank you Olivia. I highly recommend Physio Pro and Olivia.

Communicate with your therapist about your comfort levels to ensure the pressure is appropriate. Post-massage, you might feel some soreness for a day or two, which is typically followed by significant pain relief and improved posture.

Deep tissue massage focuses on applying firm pressure to reach deeper muscle layers and connective tissues, aiming to alleviate chronic muscle tension and tightness. Remedial massage, on the other hand, is a comprehensive approach that assesses and treats muscles, tendons, ligaments, and connective tissues to assist in rehabilitation, pain, and injury management. It employs various techniques, including deep tissue massage, to address specific issues and promote overall healing.

Yes, deep tissue massage can be effective in breaking down scar tissue. By applying firm pressure to deeper muscle layers and connective tissues, the massage helps in breaking down adhesions and collagen fibers formed in response to an injury, thereby relieving restriction and pain.
