What is Ankylosing Spondylitis?
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a form of arthritis that causes inflammation of the joints in the spine. Reduced mobility is a key finding of health practitioners as part of the process is there is new bone growth formation which is stimulated by inflammation.
Signs and Symptoms
Pain and stiffness is the most common sign which can be seen with activities of daily living like checking your blind spot in the car. Your thoracic rotation may limit this and other movements. The most important consideration is that if you don’t use it you loose it with AS. So the best thing to maintain movement is to continue to stretch and move.
Treatment
AS can’t be cured with pharmaceuticals so the best management is to use manual therapy from your local PhysioPro to maintain muscle length and joint mobility. Physiotherapy is also critical to provide specific exercises to maintain mobility and strength.
